TEN MILE TOMBSTONE

As the story was related to us, in the early part of the 1900’s a man named Grant had killed all his family except for his oldest son, who had attended a dance or party and was gone at the time.

When this son came home and put up his horse, he found his father in the barn where he had killed himself.  When the son went into the house, he found the rest of the family killed by the father.

According to our source, due to the old man being so mean, the devil did not even want him in Hell and his tombstone was cold even on the hottest days.

We visited the cemetery and found a set of graves, under the name of Grant, with all having the same date of death as December 26,1911.  At this time, we are not sure whether these graves belong to the Grant family in the story.

The day we were there it was cloudy and all stones were cool to the touch so the story about the temperature of the headstone was unable to be confirmed.

While trying to find out anything on this report on the Internet, a mention of a Corner’s Inquest for a James T. Grant was found to have occurred in Saline County in 1911.  The Inquest gives a hint of truth to the relating of an unusual death associated with the story.  We are going to attempt to find any old newspaper accounts that mention the deaths.
